Home Makeover
In a recent survey 61% of people interviewed expressed a desire to have a home makeover. Many of them said that their
inspiration came from stores such as Home Depot and Lowes or publications like Better Homes & Gardens or House Beautiful
but over half said that their prime motivation came from watching house makeover shows on TV such as ABC's Extreme Home
Makeover or HGTV's Dream Home. Shows such as these have a broad reach and can have literally thousands of people reaching
for the DIY catalogs. By far the greatest number of people said that their inspiration was derived
from Home Makeover although an appreciable percentage quoted the DIY Network
as being a source of inspiration as well as Debbie Travis who hosts several home improvement shows.
As well as complete home makeovers there is substantial interest in single room remodeling projects. The advantage with this
is obviously the lower cost and the fact that a total makeover can be staged and spread over a reasonable time frame in order
to keep the budget manageable. Programs such as HGTV's Divine Design with Candice Olsen have fired the minds of many people
and themed rooms are becoming more popular along with Home Makeover.
The most poular transformations are kitchen remodeling and bathroom upgrades followed closely by basement upgrades. The most
highly desired project is actually the integration of a home theater - with over 62% of people surveyed wanting one - but it
is one of those projects that is rarely achieved in practice as the more functional rooms take precedence within the budget.
Other items at the top of people's wish list include hardwood floors, Home Makeover and replacement kitchen cabinets.
Nearly 12% of people surveyed said that they would like a free home makeover but only 1.5% said that they would apply for a
home makeover show on TV. Over 64% of people said that they would enter a contest to win a home makeover.
There are several ways to go about trying to win your own home makeover. Really it is no different to winning any other
kind of competition, be it a plasma TV or free meal at your favorite restaurant. The key is to maximise your chances and to
do this you need to enter as many competitions as possible. The people that really stand a chance of winning are the ones
that enter 10 or more.
There are other ways to increase your chances such as applying to be on some of the makeover shows on TV. This is always a
good idea but you need to know how to increase your chances over and above the guy next door. The TV shows are all about
entertainment and you need to show their researchers that you will add to that. Introducing some controversy is usually a
winner and they love destroying someone's favorite item or decoration. Telling them that you have been interested in
Home Makeover for a long time and demonstrating projects that have fallen into the category of
failed DIY attempts is also good fuel to bait them with.
